The highway of legends is just before La Veta Pass between Walsenburg and Trinidad (Highway 12).
This is a road that should be driven slowly. The scenery is spectacular, there are many unusual rock formations and the road in one spot rides along what was one of the largest open seam coal mines in Colorado.
If you're heading through the Southern part of the state this is a side trip well worth taking!

Dinosaurs!!
Dinosaur National Monument is in the northwest corner of Colorado near Vernal, Utah. We first visited this area when our children were in their pre-teen years, and it was something that held their interest. We've been back a few times since then and have not been disappointed.
The Visitors Center is a warehouse sized facility that includes a strata that has shifted and tilted upward so a variety of dinosaur bones have been exposed for viewing. It is easy to spend a couple of hours reading the information placards regarding the skeletons right before you.
Many of the dinosaur exhibits in the Smithsonian came from this region.
